Among nearly 300 million migrant workers in the country, there are 115.7 million local migrant workers working in nearby rural areas, an increase of 1.03 million from the previous year, a growth of 0.9%.
There are 172.66 million migrant workers going out to work, an increase of 810,000 from the previous year, a growth of 0.5%. The number of migrant workers entering cities is 135.06 million, which is a decrease of 1.5% compared to last year. So, why are migrant workers unwilling to work in cities? The reasons are both sad and helpless. Although migrant workers earn more in cities than at home, they can only do some 'dirty' work and earn a meager income.
Migrant workers not only earn money by returning home, but also face great pressure in big cities. Some migrant workers have to hire people to eat, which is also very costly, thus 'replacing' the migrant workers. In addition, if farmers go to work in cities, married individuals will face the issue of left-behind family members, needing to take care of abandoned grandparents and children, which is certainly overwhelming. At the same time, technological advancements have led to a gradual shift away from manual labor, with some jobs that migrant workers could do being replaced by machines, resulting in unemployment for migrant workers in cities.
Perhaps it is precisely because of these various real issues that migrant workers are unwilling to work in cities. Where have the migrant workers gone?
First, they retire and return home. Now the first generation of migrant workers is aging, and if they cannot settle in the city, they must retire back to their hometown. The decrease in the elderly migrant worker population is, in a sense, an important reason for the current decline in the number of migrant workers.
The second urbanization process encourages migrant workers to return home to start businesses, as rural areas are getting better, and favorable policies give returnees a sense of reality and belonging. While a large number of migrant workers are leaving, the trend of returning home to start businesses is also very obvious.
Third, economic transformation and modernization have reduced the mobility of migrant workers across provinces, making them more likely to work at 'threshold' jobs. With the adjustment and modernization of the industrial structure in the eastern region, manufacturing is shifting to the central and western regions, leading migrant workers to move from large eastern cities to small and medium-sized cities or even counties in the central and western regions. Many migrant workers are 'escaping' from the Pearl River Delta, choosing to work closer to home.
